Have you ever have thousands of thought running through your
head on what your shutdown button can do?
Well I know you might not understand what I mean,
fine am going to explain.
Have you ever click your start menu trying to shut down your
laptop or PC and you accidentally click
that right triangle arrow that pop up options like the one in the picture
below.
The big deal here is, do you know
what it all means or what it can do to your laptop or PC once you choose one
out of the option ranging from
·
SWITCH USER
·
LOG OFF
·
RESTART
·
SLEEP
·
HIBERNATE
Let start from the
"ON"
well this is that state when you push that physical
power button in your PC (personal computer), trying to get your operating system running and
bringing up programs and activities for you to use efficiently.
SWITCH USER
technically as the
name implies, upon click you switch between one user in your PC to another in the
same PC.
Well before I explain do know that
one can share a computer with two or more people and still have your document
safe as long as you password your user account.
What this mean is for example in your
phone you can share your Facebook application with your friend to login his or
her own account. If you still want to log in back to your own account you can
still do so, in such way SWITCH USER works.
Just like me I have two user accounts
which I created on my laptop with different password. One of the account is
where I do all my gaming, music, and other entertainment stuff while the other
account is where I do my computing stuff so when am done playing game and want
to do some programming instead of shutting my laptop off and back on I just
click the SWITCH USER option and it shows all the user in my laptop then I can
select the one I want.
LOG OFF
this log you out of the
user you are currently one and then lock your screen showing waiting for you to
choose the user you want to log in. these works the same way the log out in
your Facebook account does.
If your clicks the log off button
automatically it close all program you are working on, so always save your work
before you log off from one user to another.
Note if you did not log off your
user account and you just click the switch button and log in to another user,
do know that the previous user is still on so someone can easily switch back to
that easily without system asking for a password but if you log off and someone
try to log in, the system will ask for a password before opening the account.
In a simple way if you don’t log
out your Facebook account before giving your friend to log in, won’t your
friend see your account detail and stuff?? As such he/she can check that secret
message you send to your crush.
RESTART
upon click on the restart
button your PC will reboot. This means that your PC will first close all active
programs then shut down and back on again all by itself. This is required after
software installation or when you are troubleshooting your PC (personal
computer) or during window update.
LOCK
This is something I do often
when am doing something and I don’t want anybody to edit or see what I am doing
when trying to get something in the next room in the middle of a document.
What this does is to lock your
user account and if your PC, laptop have password it just wait for you to input
your password before it can bring up all the active program back for you.
Shortcut key for lock screen is
press down your window key + letter L button together.
SLEEP
if you click this button all your
active program and works will be save in your RAM memory.
Now here is the key aspect behind the sleep
button when there is no electricity while you use your PC and you put it in the
sleep mode, the electricity will still be drawn out of your PC but not with
same amount like when it’s fully in ON STATE.
Mind you if you leave it for a
very long time and the PC battery discharge and off, all your active program
and document won’t be saved, because the ram memory is a volatile memory that
only retain data as long as it has electricity going through it.
But one sweet thing about this
SLEEP mode is that when there is still power in your PC and you tab up the mouse
(wake the computer) immediately everything resume so fast. I repeat only when
power is still in it.
This mode is suitable when you are
in the middle of a document and you wish to get something that won’t waste your
time and you wish to start up all your works when you come back. If you don’t trust
your battery I will advance you to shutdown your system after saving your
data because if your battery discharges before you come back you will lose all
your unsaved data.
HIBERNATION OR HIBERNATE
upon click on the
hibernation button automatically your active program, document even downloading
data will be saved in your boot drive instead of the RAM into a folder called “hiberfil.sys”
This mode kind of shut down the PC
off but still draws out power but not as much as when you put it in sleep mode.
The sweet thing about this mode is
that when you hibernate and leave your PC even for two days after which the battery
have been discharged, if you power up your PC and on it back all your active
program will still be active and all downloading data will continue. In other
word when you hibernate you PC it like how last memory in DVD player works, it
will start from where you stop.
This is possible because the boot
drive (hard disk drive and solid state drive) are non-volatile memory. It only takes time to boot up but when it
does boot up you will continue from where you stop.
I use this mode when am hooked up
with my works to the range that I did not notice how low my battery is, before I
start closing open folders and files not just that am still downloading
something I really don’t want to stop or start over again latter because that
will be data use wastage as such I will just hibernate PC till whenever I charge
it up, so I can start from where I stop.
